Aberdeen's New Visitor Levy

Fortunately, it doesn't apply to Insch!

A new visitor levy is on the way for overnight stays in Aberdeen. Aberdeen City Council has approved a 7% charge on paid accommodation, with the levy due to begin on 1 April 2027.

What does that mean for visitors?

The levy will be 7% of the room cost before VAT and it will apply to each night of your stay. There won’t be a daily cap, so the total will depend on the length and cost of your booking.

For advance bookings, accommodation providers will need to include the levy on bookings made from 1 October 2026 for stays taking place on or after 1 April 2027.

It will apply to hotels, B&Bs, guest houses, hostels, self-catering properties, campsites and caravan parks within the City of Aberdeen. Cruise ships and motorhomes are not included.

For many visitors, this could mean paying around £5 to £10 extra per night for a hotel room in the Granite City. The money raised is expected to support local tourism, major events and infrastructure across Aberdeen.

Here’s the good news if you’re planning a trip to the area: the levy only applies within the City of Aberdeen. It won’t apply to countryside hotels like ours, so you can enjoy a relaxed stay at The Station Hotel Insch and keep a little extra in your pocket too.

We’re just across the road from Insch railway station, with easy train links into Aberdeen whenever you fancy a day in the city. If you’d like a quieter base with a warm welcome, we’d be delighted to have you stay with us.
